Clown
Sad as a painted clown, a beautiful boy in an ugly town
but when your circus closes down don’t walk away from me
you’ve been asleep too long, the birds are bruises in the dawn
the pounds of flesh between us stretch as far as you can see
But all you ever do is walk away and I know if you’d only go slow
you could see what it means to be making the scene with me
But all you ever do is walk away and I think if you tried
you could find a little time
for the life I can see in your eyes, don’t go. Don’t go.
Sometimes you just explode and no one alive can break your code
You have a language of your own, an unconnected road
The people you called your friends, the places you won’t go again
The decades lost in finding them, you’ll have to let them go.
Stephin Merritt is the genius behind the Magnetic Fields. He’s an amazing songwriter and he’s got at least one other clown-related lyric.
I wandered in these big blue shoes,
till we had nothing left to lose.
Nobody wants you when you’re a circus clown.
I should know.
I looked all over town.
I wandered in these big blue shoes,
till we had nothing left to lose.
Nobody wants you when you’re a circus clown.
I should know.
I looked all over town.
I guess folks just don’t like my face.
They make out like I’m some disgrace.
But nothing’s gonna change this painted frown.
And I know.
I looked all over town.
Maybe somewhere I could be free.
Somewhere they won’t throw rocks at me.
Somewhere this crazy hair could be my crown.
But all my life,
I’ve looked all over town.
So whistling this circus tune,
I inflated one more balloon.
And as I floated up I looked straight down.
And I looked all over town.
One last time.
I looked all over town.
A great songwriter from another era also talked about clowns
Now if there’s a smile on my face
it’s only there tryin’ to fool the public
but when it comes down to foolin’ you;
Now honey, that’s quite a different subject
But don’t let my glad expression
give you the wrong impression
Really I’m sad
I’m sadder than sad
You’re gone and I’m hurtin’ so bad
Like a clown I pretend to be glad
Now there’s some sad things known to man
but ain’t too much sadder than
the tears of a clown
when there’s no one around
Now if I appear to be carefree
it’s only to camouflage my sadness
In order to keep my pride I try
to cover the hurt with a show of gladness
But don’t let my show convince you
that I’ve been happy since you
decided to go
Oh, I need you so
I’m hurt and I want you to know
Now there’s some sad things known to man
but ain’t too much sadder than
the tears of a clown
when there’s no one around
Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my sadness hid
Smiling in the public eye
But in my lonely room I cry
the tears of a clown
when there’s no one around
Clowns are occasionally funny, fundamentally sad but they can be scary too. Remember Stephen King’s It and Pennywise the creepy clown played by Tim Curry?
Since we’re talking about freaky clowns, let’s go to David Lynch‘s world for a while.
A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
“Go to sleep. Everything is all right.”
In 2011, years after using Roy Orbison’s In dreams in Blue Velvet, David Lynch released his first solo album Crazy Clown Time (That’s if you don’t count BlueBob…)
They all run around
Oh, it’s crazy clown time!
It was really fun!
There’s also a weird video he released for his first single from the album. I don’t know if you can stream it from here since you need to sign in.
I know you got to go
Seen in comin’ baby
Just as plain as a day
Seen it comin’ at me
No way you can’t stay
I know, I know, I know
I, I, I know
Don’t have to tell me baby
I’m going to leave you on a lighter note. The picture on top is from a dance movie directed by Lloyd Newson: DV8 Physical Theatre‘s The Cost of Living. I can’t even start to describe it, I love it so much!
Have a look below and try to find and watch the whole film (it’s only 35 min long).
Walk
Sometimes you ask yourself who works in advertising…
It reminds me of that Bill Hicks routine.
How sexist can you go?
I’ve heard that Lebanon is the only place in the World with McDonald’s Valet and Delivery.
People buy their license / They don’t need to learn how to park / there’s always Valet… Totally Clueless (1995)
Josh: You want to practice parking?
Cher: What’s the point? Everywhere you go has valet.
You keep saying you got something for me
Something you call love but confess
You’ve been a’messin’ where you shouldn’t ‘ve been a’messin’
And now someone else is getting all your best
Well, these boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
You keep lyin’ when you oughta be truthin’
You keep losing when you oughta not bet
You keep samin’ when you oughta be a’changin’
What’s right is right but you ain’t been right yet
These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
You keep playing where you shouldn’t be playing
And you keep thinking that you’ll never get burnt (HAH)
Well, I’ve just found me a brand new box of matches (YEAH)
And what he knows you ain’t had time to learn
These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
Are you ready, boots?
Start walkin’

So I was discussing this post with someone last night and we were trying to find uplifting walking song: Walk This Way, I Walk The Line, Walk On The Wild Side… But the only ones that stuck were the sad ones
Each step is moving, it’s moving me up
moving, it’s moving me up
Every step is moving me up
moving me up, moving, moving me up
Every step is
moving me up
One tiny, tiny,
tiny move
It’s all I need
And I jump over
Every step is moving me up
This is how we walk on the moon
This is how we walk on the moon
Let’s stay in this mood and continue some more.
Sad as a painted clown, a beautiful boy in an ugly town
but when your circus closes down don’t walk away from me
you’ve been asleep too long, the birds are bruises in the dawn
the pounds of flesh between us stretch as far as you can see
But all you ever do is walk away
See the idiot walk
See the idiot talk
See the idiot chalk up his name on the blackboard
See the robot walk
See the robot talk
See the robot write up his name on the ballot
They say, this is all I need to get by
The truth is, baby, it’s a lie
And here’s a bonus to see you off: The disclaimer you can find at the door of a number of place around town. Makes you wonder if they actually thought it through:
“Please keep the motor running, I’m gonna pick something up from the register. And please don’t mind the AK47 on the passenger seat…”
Game over
Here we are, still together
We are one…
So much time, wasted,
Playing games with love
So many tears I’ve cried
So much pain inside
But baby it ain’t over ’til it’s over
So many years we’ve tried
To keep our love alive
But baby it ain’t over ’til it’s over
How many times
Did we give up
But we always worked things out
And all my doubts and fears
Kept me wondering, yeahhh
If I’d always, always be in love…
I drink a coffee every morning
It comes from a place that’s far away
And when I’m done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say
I don’t want you thinking I’m unhappy
What is closer to the truth
Is if I lived ’til I was one-hundred and two
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you
I don’t want to get over you
I guess I could take a sleeping pill and sleep at will
And not have to go through what I go through
I guess I should take Prozac, right and just smile all night
At somebody new, somebody not too bright but sweet and kind
Who would try to get you off my mind, I could leave this agony behind
Which is just what I’d do if I wanted to but I don’t want to get over you
‘Cause I don’t want to get over love
I could listen to my therapist, pretend you don’t exist
And not have to dream of what I dream of
I could listen to all my friends and go out again
And pretend it’s enough or I could make a career of being blue
I could dress in black and read Camus
Smoke clove, cigarettes and drink Vermouth
Like I was 17, that would be a scream but I don’t want to get over you
Sforzando
And now the news:
Today’s Soft Focus is on the Sugar Free Soy Flour Sausage Festival of Spanish Fork, UTAH.
It seems that the Saturated Fat of those Specialty Foods covers thousands of Square Feet and has dealt an unprecedented blow to the Sunflower industry in the region. This Scarcely Found type of Swine Flu is very dangerous because of its hybridization with Scarlet Fever.
Sustained Fire is the only solution to eradicate this mutant disease. Our Secret Friends at the Special Forces have guaranteed that all Safety Factors will be respected: Scuderia Ferrari has been transformed into an actual Strike Force with Significant Figures that recall the heyday of Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein and Denmark’s Socialistisk Folkeparti.
With its Simple Formulation, Sigmund Freud’s Super Friendly Survivor Function has transformed the Spayed Female’s Smoking Fetish into a Super Fancy Static Force. Our Semi Floating Star-Fleet is here with Sword and Fist to make sure the Swiss Franc System Failure is not repeated and the Sexy Female’s Sticky Fingers are defiantly aimed at her Step-Father, looking for a Soft Feel on the Shop Floor.
Please forgive the Semifinished Sentence Fragments ; I’d say this is more Speculative than Science Fiction.
Sincerely,
Superfreak
Scott McKenzie – San Francisco (Mediafire Link)
If you’re going to San Francisco
You’re gonna meet some gentle people there
That’s the song most people get in their head. I could have also posted Village People’s Go West.
But I went in for the kill with his one
Magnetic Fields – Come Back From San Francisco (Mediafire Link)
Come back from San Francisco.
It can’t be all that pretty,
when all of New York City misses you.
Should pretty boys in discos distract you from your novel,
remember I’m awful in love with you.
[…]
When you betray me, betray me with a kiss.
Damn you. I’ve never stayed up as late as this.
And continued with this one: the manipulative cherry on top
Chris Isaak – San Francisco Days (Mediafire Link)
I still love you, I still want you.
I still need you, don’t hang up and say goodbye.
[…]
we never will be through…
