(Indie-an) Summer

Marie Laurencin, Trois jeunes femmes, vers 1953

Marie Laurencin, Trois jeunes femmes, vers 1953

It started with a pang.
At dawn
Was it hunger, an irresistible thirst or just my guilty conscience running away with me?
I obviously opted for hunger.
“French toast with molasses
Croquet and baked alaskas”

I’d been listening to this new box-set of REM rarities and found this gorgeous track.
Turns out they were covering Indie band Beat Happening

Of course, it’s not about food or a a picnic or just about “Indian summer” the golf and country club in Olympia (where beat Happening are from).
Star-crossed lovers? Oral sex? Theories abound.

“Touch girl, apple blossom
Just a boy playing possum
We’ll come back for Indian summer
And go our separate ways”

I just really like it. Makes me feel sad in a good way.

And to think I always thought it was a Ben Gibbard song

In the end, your subconscious always gets the upper hand.
Anyway…
It reminded me of another sad summer-y breakup track. Also a cover; this time by The National and St. Vincent

“Weary sun, sleep tonight, go crashing into the ocean
Cut the line that ties the tide and moon, ancient and blue
We take our empty hearts and fill them up with broken things
To hang on humming wire like cheap lamps down a dead end street
Close your weary eyes until the wintertime
And every time we turn away it hits me like a tidal wave
I would change for you but, babe, that doesn’t mean I’m gonna be a better man
Give the ocean what I took from you so one day you could find it in the sand
And hold it in your hands again

Cold ways kill cool lovers
Strange ways we used each other
Why won’t you fall back in love with me?
There ain’t no way we’re gonna find another
The way we sleep all summer
So why won’t you fall back in love with me?”

Indie artists covering Indie-er artists
I prefer the cover, but here’s the original by Crooked Fingers

And then randomness (who’s always been my closest ally) gives me the perfect outro: Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra covering Joe Dassin.

If you don’t know the original, here you go. Weirdly enough, he was American but sang in French…
For me it’s the civil war in Lebanon, Dédé and the unfortunately not too frequent “so bad it’s good” moments on Radio Nostalgie.

“je me souviens, je me souviens très bien
De ce que je t’ai dit ce matin-là
Il y a un an, y a un siècle, y a une éternité”

Post-Scriptum / Anatomy of a post:
Seems that very low voices were the common thread… or maybe that’s always the case…

Reminds me of that lyric from Leonard Cohen ‘s Tower of Song:
“I was born like this, I had no choice. I was born with the gift of a golden voice”

Pretty in Pink

leave a comment »

caroline laughs and it’s raining all day
she loves to be one of the girls
she lives in the place in the side of our lives
where nothing is ever put straight
she turns her self round and
she smiles and she says
this is it
that’s the end of the joke
and loses herself in her dreaming and sleep
and her lovers walk through in their coats
pretty in pink isn’t she
pretty in pink
isn’t she

all of her lovers all talk of her notes
and the flowers that they never sent
and wasn’t she easy
and isn’t she pretty in pink
the one who insists he was first in the line
is the last to remember her name
he’s walking around in this dress that she wore
she is gone but the joke’s the same
pretty in pink isn’t she
pretty in pink
isn’t she

caroline talks to you softly sometimes
she says “i love you” and “too much”
she doesn’t have anything you want to steal
well nothing you can touch
she waves
she buttons your shirt
the traffic is waiting outside
she hands you this coat
she gives you her clothes
these cars collide
pretty in pink isn’t she
pretty in pink
isn’t she

caroline’s on the table screaming
confidence is in the sea
and all their favorite rags are worn
and other kinds of uniform
they kid you you’re really free
and you know what you want to be
case of individuality
until tomorrow
and everything you are you’ll see
in pure shiny buttons
they put you in this gear
and driveways broken
doorbell sings in chimes
it plays anything goes
bells toll in rhyme

I love this daytrotter cover. There’s also the Ariel Aparicio version: “and it feels like love”

and the original of course by the Psychedelic Furs from the John Hughes movie of the same name

Best scene ever… obviously. This one’s for you

Fear

leave a comment »

Just watched the latest episode of Philosophie on arte. It’s Raphael Enthoven’s vulgarization show which is hit and miss. You might know him as ex- MR Carla Bruni. Check out the story, it’s a real soap!!

This one was interesting and touched on a lot of subjects, including fear.
Confiance vs. défiance
Confiance vs. méfiance
Confiance vs. soupçon
Confiance vs. peur…

Pulp – The Fear (Live)

This is our Music from A Bachelors Den
– the sound of loneliness turned up to ten.
A horror soundtrack from a stagnant water-bed & it sounds just like this.
This is the sound of someone losing the plot –
making out that they’re okay when they’re not.
You’re gonna like it, but not a lot & the chorus goes like this:

Oh Baby, here comes the fear again.
The end is near again.
A monkey’s built a house on your back.
You can’t get anyone to come in the sack
& here comes another panic attack.
Oh here we go again.

So now you know the words to our song,
pretty soon you’ll all be singing along.
When you’re sad, when you’re lonely & it all turns out wrong.
When you’ve got the fear.
& when you’re no longer searching for beauty or love –
just some kind of life with the edges taken off.
When you can’t even define what it
is that you are frightened of
this song will be here.

Oh Baby, here comes the fear again.
The end is near again.
If you ever get that chimp off your back.
If you ever find the thing that you lack
but you know you’re only having a laugh
& here we go again.
Until the end
Until the end

The National – I’m Afraid of Everyone (feat. Sufjan Stevens)

Venom radio and venom television
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
They’re the young blue bodies
With the old red bodies
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
With my kid on my shoulders I try

Not to hurt anybody I like
But I don’t have the drugs to sort
I don’t have the drugs to sort it out
Sort it out

I’ll defend my family with my orange umbrella
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone
With my shiny new star
Spangling tennis shoes on
I’m afraid of everyone, I’m afraid of everyone

With my kid on my shoulders I try
Not to hurt anybody out

But I don’t have the drugs to sort
I don’t have the drugs to sort it out
Sort it out
I don’t have the drugs to sort it out
Sort it out

You’re the voice that’s swallowing my soul, soul, soul
(repeat)

The Smiths – Girl Afraid

Girl afraid
Where do his intentions lay ?
Or does he even have any ?

Boy afraid
Prudence never pays
….
I’ll never make that mistake again!

I’m scared, I’m scared, I’m scared
I’m scared, so scared
I’m scared, I’m scared, I’m scared
As the years roll away
And the price that I paid
And the straws slips away

You don’t have to suffer
It is what it is
No bell book or candle
Can get you out of this, oh no!

I’m scarred, I’m scarred, I’m scarred
I’m scarred, uh huh
I’m scarred, I’m scarred, I’m scarred
Every day of my life
I just manage to survive
I just wanna stay alive

You don’t have to worry
In heaven or hell
Just dance to the music
You do it so well, well, well!

Hatred and jealousy, gonna be the death of me
I guess I knew it right from the start
Sing out about love and peace
Don’t wanna see the red raw meat
The green eyed goddamn straight from your heart

I’m tired, I’m tired, I’m tired
Of being so alone
No place to call my own
Like a rollin’ stone
