Land Ho! ly
Grandma loved a sailor who sailed the frozen sea.
Grandpa was that whaler and he took me on his knee.
He said “Son I’m going crazy from living on the land
Got to find my shipmates and walk on foreign sand.”
Land Ho! / Holy Land…
La terre d’Israël, les enfants d’Israël;
La terre d’Israël, les enfants d’Israël;
Les villes d’Israël, le pays d’Israël;
Les villes d’Israël, le pays d’Israël;
Tous les Goliaths venus des pyramides,
Reculeront devant l’étoile de David.
Je défendrai le sable d’Israël,
La terre d’Israël, les enfants d’Israël;
La terre d’Israël, les enfants d’Israël;
La terre d’Israël, les enfants d’Israël;
J’arrive, j’arrive frissonnant destin.
Ton regard qui me fixe. Tu comprends.
Palestine !!!!
Affection
I just want some affection
I just want some affection
I don’t want no hoochie-coochie mama
No back door woman
No Queen Street sex thing
I want a tiger on bended knees
With all the kindness of the Japanese
I just want some affection
I wish I heard voices
Wish I was a telephone
The Go-Betweens’ first single, released in 1978. The master tapes for this and the second single were lost, forcing all reissues of these songs to be made from the vinyl.
The guitar reminds me – a lot – of Patti Smith’s Dancing Barefoot
she is benediction
she is addicted to thee
she is the root connection
she is connecting with he
here I go and I don’t know why
I fell so ceaselessly
could it be he’s taking over me…
I’m dancing barefoot
heading for a spin
some strange music draws me in
makes me come on like some heroin/e
There are great versions on youtube: live in 1979, live with Johnny Depp and Eddie Vedder. And of course there are the cover versions: Feelies and U2. That’s actually how I discovered this song / Threesome soundtrack 1994
It’s weird, that guitar chug reminds me of Patti Smith’s best-known song, the opening track on Horses: Gloria. It’s a cover of a Van Morrison / Them song, that was also covered by Jim Morrison and the Doors, but you knew that. Didn’t you?
The words are just rules and regulations to Patti:
Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine
meltin’ in a pot of thieves
wild card up my sleeve
slick heart of stone
my sins my own
they belong to me, me
and Jim well he does what he does best:
You were my queen and I was your fool,
Riding home after school.
You took me home
To your house.
Your father’s at work,
Your mama’s out shopping around.
Check me into your room.
Show me your thing.
Why’d you do it baby?
Getting softer – slow it down, etc.
Now you show me your thing.
Wrap your legs around my neck,
Wrap your arms around my feet,
Wrap your hair around my skin.
I’m gonna huh – all right, ok, yeah.
It’s getting harder – It’s getting too darn fast, etc.
Come on, now, let’s get it on.
Too late, too late, too late, too late, too late,
Make me feel all right!
And if you want one last version, check out this live Van Morrison / John Lee Hooker duet from 1989.
Daylight
Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
and moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
and found myself alone
alone
alone
above a raging sea
that stole the only girl I loved
and drowned her deep inside of me
Good morning life
Good morning sun how are your skies above
Gee it’s great to be alive and in love
Yeah, right whatever. That’s not how I feel right now. But it’s a great opening track to a really well-done animation short I saw two days ago. Turns out they even won an oscar for it. Check it out if you have 15min to spare.
In the meantime, here’s another opening track that’s been haunting me ever since I overheard it from the other room a year or two ago. I saw bits and pieces of Sopranos, but I always felt a tingle go down my spine when I heard this song.
I’m gonna take you down
Deep down to the front lines
You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Mama always said you’d be
The Chosen One.
She said: You’re one in a million
You’ve got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.
You woke up this morning
All that love had gone,
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong.
But you’re looking good, baby,
I believe you’re feeling fine,(shame about it),
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes.
Chorus
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
You woke up this morning
The world turned upside down,
Thing’s ain’t been the same
Since the Blues walked into town.
But you’re one in a million
You’ve got that shotgun shine. (shame about it)
Born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
You woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
When you woke up this morning everything you had was gone. By half past ten your head was going ding-dong.
Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes,
like a voice telling you there was something you should
know. Last night you were flying but today you’re so low
– ain’t it times like these that make you wonder if
you’ll ever know the meaning of things as they appear to
the others; wives, mothers, fathers, sisters and
brothers. Don’t you wish you didn’t function, don’t you wish you
didn’t think beyond the next paycheck and the next little
drink? Well you do so make up your mind to go on, ?cos
when you woke up this morning everything you had was gone.
woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
You wanna be the Chosen One.
woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
woke up this morning,
You got yourself a gun.
Simple transition: Alabama 3 -> Alabama Song -> Doors (Sorry, not Kurt Weill this time).
Is everybody in?
is everybody in?
is everybody in?
the ceremony is about to begin
Wake up!
You can’t remember where it was
Had this dream stopped?
Awake.
Shake dreams from your hair
my pretty child, my sweet one.
Choose the day and choose the sign of your day
the day’s divinity
First thing you see.
A vast radiant beach and cooled jeweled moon
Couples naked race down by it’s quiet side
And we laugh like soft, mad children
Smug in the wooly cotton brains of infancy
The music and voices are all around us.
Choose they croon the Ancient Ones
the time has come again
choose now, they croon
beneath the moon
beside an ancient lake
Enter again the sweet forest
Enter the hot dream
Come with us
everything is broken up and dances.
Indians scattered,
On dawn’s highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young child’s,
Fragile eggshell mind
My fragile eggshell mind has been desperately looking for a cure
show me
show me
show me
how you do that trick
the one that makes me scream
she said
the one that makes me laugh
she said
and threw her arms around my neck
show me how you do it
and i promise you
i promise that i’ll run away with you
i’ll run away with you
spinning on that dizzy edge
i kissed her face and kissed her head
and dreamed of all the different ways i had
to make her glow
why are you so far away?
she said
but won’t you ever know that i’m in love with you?
that i’m in love with you?
you
soft and only
you
lost and lonely
you
strange as angels
dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
you’re just like a dream…
you’re just like a dream…
daylight licked me into shape
i must have been asleep for days
and moving lips to breathe her name
i opened up my eyes
and found myself alone
alone
alone
above a raging sea
that stole the only girl i loved
and drowned her deep inside of me
you
soft and only
you
lost and lonely
you
just like heaven
That’s more like it: Teenage heartbreak in all its glory. Choking up, tearing up and dancing. It’s funny how so many 80s songs get you dancing to the saddest lyrics in the world.

Californication
The communication for Hank Moody’s show reminds me of this site
Anyway…
The Doors – L.A. Woman
Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
Where the little girls in their Hollywood bungalows
Are you a lucky little lady in The City of Light
Or just another lost angel…City of Night
City of Night, City of Night, City of Night, woah, c’mon
[…]
I see your hair is burnin’
Hills are filled with fire
If they say I never loved you
You know they are a liar
Drivin’ down your freeways
Midnite alleys roam
Cops in cars, the topless bars
Never saw a woman…
So alone, so alone
So alone, so alone
First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
I’d be safe and warm
if I was in L.A
California Dreamin’
on such a winter’s day
Admiral Radley – I Heart California
I am California… yeah?
The warm friendlier skies
You’re still my favorite past life martyred saint
Give me the places, I’ll give you the names
Wasted away alone on the planes
What’s it like to be small time and gay?
F*ck it baby, I know you’ll never change
[…]
Now you’ve corrupted us all with your sexuality
Tried to tell me love was free
Tried to tell me love was free
I said them? Maybe you you you you you and me
