Go away closer

This picture is taken from Dayanita Singh’s novel without words of the same name

And we continue with this morning’s theme, with a confusing answer to my question “Should I stay or should I go?”

Yesterday I got so old
I felt like I could die
Yesterday I got so old
It made me want to cry

Go on go on
Just walk away

Go on go on
Your choice is made
Go on go on
And disappear
Go on go on
Away from here

And know I was wrong
When I said it was true
That couldn’t be me
and be her in between

without you
Without you

Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside

Come back come back
Don’t walk away

Come back come back
Come back today
Come back come back
Why can’t you see?
Come back come back
Come back to me

And I know I was wrong
When i said it was true
That it couldn’t be me
and be her in between

without you
Without you

Those Inbetween days are slightly disturbing.

Green light, seven eleven
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes
You don’t smoke, don’t even want to
Hey now, i see you check your change
Dressed up like a car crash
The wheels are turning but you’re upside down
You say when he hits you, you don’t mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Oh, now, Is that what it is?

Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depends on who’s around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip sync with the talk show hosts

And if you look, you look through me
And if you talk it’s not to me
And when I touch you, you don’t feel a thing

If I could stay.. then the night would give you up
Stay, and the day would keep it’s trust
Stay, and the night would be enough

Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio waves
With satellite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans, London, Belfast and Beirut(??? not… just checking if you actually read the lyrics)

And if you listen I can’t call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout I’ll only hear you

If I could stay.. then the night would give you up
Stay then the day would keep it’s trust
Stay with the demons you drown
Stay with the spirit I found
Stay and the night would be enough

Three o’clock in the morning
It’s quiet and there’s no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to the ground
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel hits the ground

The teenager in me… ufff! I know, I know.

Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
It’s not warm when she’s away.
Ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone
She’s always gone too long
Anytime she goes away.

I don’t know why this track came to me as an afterthought…

Moving up slowly
Inertia keeps
Moving up slowly
She comes
Moving up slowly
Moving up slowly
She comes moving up slowly
Inertia creeps moving up slowly

Secret

This blog is just some “reeds to talk to”: King Midas has donkey ears.
This guy is clearly not using it so I might as well steal his concept…

Do you remember that dialogue from In the Mood For love?
Chow Mo-wan: In the old days, if someone had a secret they didn’t want to share… you know what they did?
Ah Ping: Have no idea.
Chow Mo-wan: They went up a mountain, found a tree, carved a hole in it, and whispered the secret into the hole. Then they covered it with mud. And leave the secret there forever.
Ah Ping: What a pain! I’d just go to get laid.
Chow Mo-wan: Not everyone’s like you.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear

http://youtu.be/UQG8fGXQBYo

It’s no secret that a friend is someone who lets you help
It’s no secret that a liar won’t believe anyone else
They say a secret is something you tell one other person
So I’m telling you, child

It’s no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest
It’s no secret ambition bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief

Can you keep a secret?
Honestly, no?
If I know a good story,
It bubbles out of me,
Like weeds from the ground.

Can you keep a secret?
Okay, I will try.
But sooner or later,
The volcano’s crater
Will erupt again.
Erupt, erupt, erupt, erupt, again.
Erupt, erupt, erupt, erupt, again.
I can’t keep it inside.

Can you keep a secret?
What choice do I have?
The door that you’ve opened,
The seal that you’ve broken,
You cannot shut now.

Can you keep a secret?
Well, why do you ask?
It’s clear from the gallery,
You’re dying to tell me
What’s been going on.
You can’t keep it inside.
You can’t keep it inside.
You can’t keep it inside.

For the sake of this post, here’s a guilty secret: I just love Madonna’s late nineties/early noughties fast guitar tracks like this one and definitely this one:

http://youtu.be/sedhkVMYAuo

Happiness lies in your own hand
It took me much too long to understand
How it could be
Until you shared your secret
with me

I don’t know why, but I’ve always deliberately sung it “A penis lies in her own hands…”
Is that what you call a happy ending?
Once again, unforeseen full-circle has been reached. Good night!

Affection

I just want some affection
I just want some affection
I don’t want no hoochie-coochie mama
No back door woman
No Queen Street sex thing
I want a tiger on bended knees
With all the kindness of the Japanese
I just want some affection
I wish I heard voices
Wish I was a telephone

The Go-Betweens’ first single, released in 1978. The master tapes for this and the second single were lost, forcing all reissues of these songs to be made from the vinyl.
The guitar reminds me – a lot – of Patti Smith’s Dancing Barefoot

she is benediction
she is addicted to thee
she is the root connection
she is connecting with he

here I go and I don’t know why
I fell so ceaselessly
could it be he’s taking over me…

I’m dancing barefoot
heading for a spin
some strange music draws me in
makes me come on like some heroin/e

There are great versions on youtube: live in 1979, live with Johnny Depp and Eddie Vedder. And of course there are the cover versions: Feelies and U2. That’s actually how I discovered this song / Threesome soundtrack 1994

It’s weird, that guitar chug reminds me of Patti Smith’s best-known song, the opening track on Horses: Gloria. It’s a cover of a Van Morrison / Them song, that was also covered by Jim Morrison and the Doors, but you knew that. Didn’t you?

http://youtu.be/S_j7i_ZVfxw

The words are just rules and regulations to Patti:
Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine
meltin’ in a pot of thieves
wild card up my sleeve
slick heart of stone
my sins my own
they belong to me, me

and Jim well he does what he does best:
You were my queen and I was your fool,
Riding home after school.
You took me home
To your house.
Your father’s at work,
Your mama’s out shopping around.
Check me into your room.
Show me your thing.
Why’d you do it baby?
Getting softer – slow it down, etc.
Now you show me your thing.
Wrap your legs around my neck,
Wrap your arms around my feet,
Wrap your hair around my skin.
I’m gonna huh – all right, ok, yeah.
It’s getting harder – It’s getting too darn fast, etc.
Come on, now, let’s get it on.
Too late, too late, too late, too late, too late,
Make me feel all right!

And if you want one last version, check out this live Van Morrison / John Lee Hooker duet from 1989.

Trash

leave a comment »

Well the insomnia isn’t getting any better
So I thought I’d just go with the flow and follow rivers…

Beirut’s underbelly blablabla
Oh well, not as nitty gritty as I thought it’d be. Or else I wouldn’t be back here posting about it.

I know a girl, a girl called Party
Party girl
I know she wants more than a party
Party girl
And she won’t tell me her name

I know a boy, a boy called Trash
Trash Can
I know he does all that he can
Wham Bam
And he won’t tell me his name

I have a heart, a heart that’s beating inside
When I was three I thought the world revolved around me
I was wrong
And so I sing along
And if you dance, then dance with me

I know a girl, a girl called Party
Party girl
I know she wants more than a party
Party girl
I know a boy, a boy called Trampoline
You know what I mean

I think you know what he wants
I think he knows what he wants
I think he knows what he wants

U2’s “Trash, Trampoline and the Party Girl” is one of my favorite tracks from Under a Blood Red Sky. Yet another teenage resurgence. I wonder if there’s a pattern here…

PS: the image is the poster to Trash, the 2nd film from Paul Morissey‘s trilogy with Joe Dalessandro.
This movie actually got me into a lot of trouble in the early noughties with my girlfriend at the time. I told her I went to see a “trash” movie with a friend. It was actually Takashi Miike‘s “Visitor X“. And she thought I was lying about my whereabouts. She told me: You’ve seen Trash last week, and made a whole deal about it… It’s crazy what jealousy can put you through… And then you find yourself doing the same thing…

PS2: this night had at least one positive outcome / it’s always good to put a name to a face…
Plus there were the 2 Jenna Haze lookalike dykes at this new 24/7 bar in Hamra…

PS3: Inside joke / Datarock’s Fa Fa Fa (Mediafire Link)
